The History of Fort Recovery

Built around an original 17th Century Dutch Fort, Fort Recovery on Tortola, is possibly one of the last standing and oldest, completely intact Forts, not only in the British Virgin Islands, but in the entire Caribbean. This site is one of the most famous historical landmarks in the BVI. Surrounded with masses of tropical flowers, & swaying palm trees, Fort Recovery offers privacy and intimacy. Jean Lafitte, a renowned Pirate, landed at Fort Recovery in the 1600′s. Shortly afterwards, Fort Recovery was used as a Barracks for wounded soldiers, thus the name Fort Recovery was derived… according to historical evidence.

Accommodation

At Fort Recovery, Tortola, all villas and suites are directly on the beach, offering quality accommodation which is fully equipped for self-catering and furnished to an extremely high standard. The views of the British Virgin Islands from the apartments are truly spectacular.

These consist of one, two and three bedroomed accommodations and offer kitchen or kitchenette, patio or balcony, living room, bathroom, air conditioning, ceiling fans, cable TV, free WI-FI and daily maid service. Bedrooms have either king or twin beds and all have en-suite bathrooms.

Fort Recovery also offers a magnificent 8 bedroom beachfront villa offering privacy and seclusion, which is perfect for a large group of family or friends.

Dining

Fort Recovery has its own restaurant (exclusively for their guests) and freshly brewed complimentary coffee is provided every morning. There is also a good selection of restaurants a short drive away. Pussers at Soper’s Hole is in a lovely location next to the water’s edge and only 5 minutes drive. Sugar Mill, Sebastian’s on the Beach and Tropical Fusion are just over 5 minutes drive and for an even greater selection of places to eat, Road Town, the capital of the British Virgin Islands is just over 10 minutes drive. Nothing is very far on Tortola. You can choose from The Dove, The Sports Club, A Taste of India, Fantasia at Giorgio’s and many other wonderful restaurants.

Activities

Snorkelling gear is available to rent from Fort Recovery reception and you can snorkel right off the beach.

There are plenty of day sails available to book in and around Tortola and a day out with Patrick at Celtic Power Boats is a must. Patrick will give you a private tour and show you places in the BVI that you didn’t know existed! You can also take a ferry to Virgin Gorda and explore the island. The ferry ride is fabulous and only half an hour long. The ferry dock is in Road Town and about 10 minutes’ drive from Fort Recovery.

If you fancy trying your hand at zip-lining you can do this with Original Virgin Canopy Tour company and enjoy stunning views of the BVI high above Tortola. This could be followed by a visit to the Botanical Gardens in Road Town or the Callwood Rum Distillery located at Cane Garden Bay.

You can also drive over to Cane Garden Bay for kayaking, small boat sailing, stand-up paddleboarding or just a lazy swim and an afternoon of total relaxation.

At Fort Recovery, massage, meditation, reflexology, shiatsu, manicures and pedicures are available. Experience a beautiful sunset over Tortola as you relax on the dock or on your balcony or terrace.

Salt water fly-fishing trips can easily be arranged or you can fish from Fort Recovery’s own dock – a licence is required. There is also an excellent dive facility at Nanny Cay, Tortola approximately 10 minutes’ drive away.

Children are welcome and babysitting can be arranged.

Travelling to the BVI

Travelling from the UK to the British Virgin Islands

The most direct way is from Gatwick to Antigua with British Airways and onwards to Tortola with inter-Caribbean Airways, which is also a non-stop flight. Virgin Atlantic fly from Heathrow to Antigua and the onward flight is with inter-Caribbean Airways to Tortola. Alternatively, BVI Holidays can charter a private aircraft just for you and your party. You will be met when you disembark your transatlantic flight and fast-tracked through immigration and customs and taken to your waiting aircraft.

Travelling from Scotland

Flights from Edinburgh and Glasgow can also be arranged to connect with the Gatwick and Heathrow flights on certain days. Flights from regional airports can be arranged through Paris or Amsterdam to St Maarten and onwards to the BVI.

Travelling from New York, Boston or Miami

If you would like to have a few nights in New York, Boston or Miami before heading to BVI, this can also be arranged. The onward flight is via Puerto Rico which is a 35 minute hop over to the British Virgin Islands or again, a private charter can be arranged.

There are no direct flights to the BVI which is why the islands remain unspoilt, uncrowded and uncommercialised. From the summer of 2023, there will be a flight from Miami direct to Tortola.
